It’s A Wonderful Monday… WHOOT!

What could possibly be more festive than Thorin Oakenshield in my office, waving the Broncos flag?

Oh, you didn’t know that Thorin Oakenshield cares about football? Well, obviously, he does! My team won Superbowl 50!!! Still riding such a high!

Thorin and I are definitely celebrating. Yeah, so I may have alluded once or twice to the fact that I am a loyal Denver Broncos fan… both my parents were born and raised in Colorado, and one of my earliest memories of spending time with my Dad involves us sitting on the couch together, watching the Broncos during the Elway era, and me finally asking Dad, after years of vague confusion, what they always meant by first down, second down, third down, and so on. Dad looked baffled that his little football buddy, despite enthusiastic yelling and cheering, had evidently been watching football with him all her life, yet never really grasped the basic rules of the game!

Well, that was a long time ago, and now I’m at least decently familiar with the various rules and strategies involved, and I never miss a Broncos game if I can help it. When they recruited Peyton Manning four years ago, I was overjoyed. I’d always respected Manning as an amazing athlete and strategist, and feared him whenever the Broncos had to face the Colts. I was astonished when the Colts let him go, but never imagined that he’d sign with Denver and suddenly be MY quarterback. It’s pretty likely that he’ll retire now, and take his place in the NFL Hall of Fame, and as much as I’ll miss seeing him every Sunday during football season, I think it’s the right course of action… go out riding a crest of glory! (Or don’t… I’ll be cheering either way!)

Here’s a nice meme following the Broncos’ first Superbowl outing with Peyton Manning. I actually thought we had a great shot that year, but my Broncos unfortunately went AWOL.

It’s always been a bit of a rollercoaster, being a Denver fan. Denver has been to the Super Bowl 8 times, and they generally love to get there, then go down in flames. Losing scores with margins as high as 55-10 is the general rule, and even with Peyton Manning at the helm, our last Super Bowl outing ended with a score of 43-8. This season, we had an absolutely amazing defense, but our offense struggled all season, only managing to eek out wins because the defense simultaneously held off the other team and made a lot of scores of their own. As we entered the AFC championship game against the Patriots, I told Dad that really, our only hope of winning was that it was probably about time for us to make another devastating Super Bowl appearance…. LOL!

I admit it… we wore our Broncos jerseys and identical expressions of fear yesterday as the game began…

And of course, it didn’t look like ANYBODY was going to be able to stop the Panthers this season, so as our family gathered yesterday afternoon with our chile con queso and plenty of alcohol on hand to drown our sorrows, we all agreed that if the predictions were true (almost everyone who was anyone heavily favored the Panthers and the official prediction was a Panthers win by a margin of 10), we’d actually count that as a victory! Any scenario where the Broncos at least showed up and stayed within 10 points would be a suitable outcome for us! LOL

OK, so I’ll stop boring everyone with my football rejoicing now. I’ll just say that I was as astonished as everyone else when we led the game the entire time, and won with a final score of 24-10! It’s a wonderful day!

Congratulations of all Bronco’s fans!! (Admittedly, once the Packer’s were out, my #1 objective was that the Patriots be eliminated followed by a lesson in humility for Cam Newton…. #doneanddone )

Oh, yes… me, too! No matter who delivered the blow to the cheater bobeater Patriots and to Cam Newton, I’d have been generally delighted! That we did it… well, the football life doesn’t get much better than that!

Thank you! Now if only I’d thought to gamble on Denver leading and winning by such a margin, I’d be REALLY sittin’ pretty!

Oh yes! It’s a big thrill. The kiddos had to go bed at about halftime, and it was really cute when they woke up asking first thing this AM whether the Broncos were STILL winning?! (Nobody really expected they would be!)

Aw, sweet – must have been hard going to bed. Incidentally – why is the Super Bowl played on a Sunday, when everybody has to go to school/work next morning?

I suppose it comes down to traditions… Sunday is just the Pro Football day in America! LOL

Originally fewer people were working Sundays — you came home from church, ate lunch, watched a football game. Things have changed a lot in the interval culturally and the regular season games are spread out all over the week now, too.

    Congratulations to the Broncos!

Oddly, Armitage was playing for Green Bay a few years ago: https://meandrichard.wordpress.com/2011/02/05/some-things-are-still-more-important-than-richard-armitage/

Oh, that’s a great manip! I confess I wanted to do a similar, but didn’t have the time to mess with it and Hubby (my go-to manip man) is at work being an adult…. LOL!

Congratulations to you and your team. I felt like you when the German team won the soccer world championship in Brazil 2014. Just a dream!

Yes! Don’t you love that feeling? For me, the Super Bowl (if the Broncos are in it) is on par with the Olympic games in importance!

Congratulations. I was rooting for the Broncos – for one, because I have a bias against expansion teams ( crazy, right?) and I like Peyton Manning ( and Eli, of course), as a Jets/Giants fan, I’m with all who wished to see the Giants’ longtime rivals, The Patriots, get knocked out. I know how exciting it is to have your team win the Superbowl.

I can honestly say there was probably not one Sunday during my entire childhood, when the football game ( every football game) wasn’t blaring in the background ( or foreground, if I were watching). I recall at least one year when, even during Thanksgiving dinner, college games were on the TV When I was very young, I tended to annoy my brothers and father as they watched, so I learned the game quickly, lest I get exiled from the room.

But I prefer basketball, though it has less hoopla.

Yeah, I love Peyton. I watched a really interesting documentary once about the Mannings. I think it was called “The Book of Manning”… it was before my time, but their father was an amazing quarterback, so dynamic, when he played college ball- must have been really fun to watch!

I tend to root for the underdog in any game where I don’t have a stake… and here we were very widely thought, myself not excluded, to be big time underdogs. Though perhaps I should have paid attention to the statistic that (now) 10 out of 12 times when the highest ranked defense made it to the Super Bowl, they won it!

As to basketball, I do like occasionally watching the OKC Thunder, especially if they make it to the post-season, but I quickly discovered that the refs’ calls are SO subjective in that game that it was incredibly infuriating to me. Not that we don’t ever see it in pro football, but it doesn’t seem nearly as blatant in the NFL as the NBA!

Sounds fabulous!!! although i have little clue about the details, i do know how it feels being elated when you team wins, rugby being more what i used to watch and sometimes soccer 😉 Sounds like fun!
Sunday is football day over here too and it is making headlines over fans walking out of games over the ridiculously big prices of season tickets and the like 🙂 Monday morning the football is all my colleagues talk about in the office, the men that is 🙂
Love that the kids are on board with the tradition! 🙂

LOL, yes… we have a rivalry in our house. Hubby perversely decided to cheer for the Pittsburg Steelers when he was a young child and they were the hottest team, and so he’s a big Steelers fan, while I, of course, am a virtuous Broncos fan. So our Young Stinker thinks it’s cool to cheer for his daddy’s Steelers, and my beautiful, perfect wonderful angel girl always cheers for my Broncos. Luckily we eliminated the Steelers in an earlier round, so the boys (wisely) decided to back Mommy’s team for the Super Bowl! =)
